New blood for Canterbury
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 17:52
Canterbury will blood several new players when they begin the defence of their national provincial title against Hawke's Bay in Christchurch on Friday.
Several players will be making their Canterbury debut, including wing Patrick Osborne, who is in the starting XV.
Newcomers on the bench include hooker Paul Ngauamo, lock Rob Verbakel, flank Brendon O'Connor, scrumhalf Matt George, midfielder Robbie Flynn and wing Telusa Veainu.
Ngauamo, O'Connor and Veainu all have experience, New Zealand Under-20 level.
Shirley player Flynn has been called into the squad this week due to injuries in the midfield. Centre Robbie Fruean is unavailable due to an irregular heart beat (arrhythmia) which was first picked up on Monday. He has been assessed, a Christchurch Hospital and will continue to be monitored.
Hooker Steve Fualau will celebrate his blazer game (12th game) for Canterbury, as will reserve prop Andrew Olorenshaw if he takes the field.
* In other team new, Halani Aulika, who joined Otago from Auckland, was recently suspended by the Auckland Rugby Union for an incident in an Auckland club match. This decision is currently under appeal, however he is unavailable for this opening NPC match. Prop Blair Young, from the Herriot Club, has been brought into the squad as cover and has been named in the reserves.
Josh Tatupu and Chris Small will make their run-on debuts for the Otago side, while Liam Coltman, Joe Hill and Young have been included in the starting 22 for the first time.
* Waikato coach Chris Gibbes has named prop Nathan White as captain. White combines with Toby Smith at loosehead prop and experienced hooker Aled de Malmanche, who will play his 101 first class game.
Experienced lock Toby Lynn joins up with New Zealand Maori representative Romana Graham to make up the tight five.
In the loose forward trio returning to the Waikato team, No. 8 Steven Setephano starts with All Black Liam Messam on the blindside and Jack Lam on the openside flank.
In the Waikato backline, vice-captain Brendon Leonard will start at scrumhalf, with former New Zealand Under-20 representative Trent Renata starting in the No.10 jersey. Brumbies Super 14 player and rookie to the Waikato team Christian Lealiifano will debut in the red, yellow and black hoops at fullback.
