Parisse to captain Stade Français

Fri, 30 Jul 2010 13:43

Country and now club: Italin captain Sergio Parisse

Sergio Parisse, captain and No.8 of Italy, one of the big personalities of the rugby world, has been appointed captain of Stade Français for the coming season.

This is a vote of confidence in the great player whose season last year was blighted by injury.

As he suffered so did the famous club, ending eighth on the log, slipping each year from first place in 2007 to third to fourth. Eight is remarkably low for the prestigious club and means that the club will not play in the Heineken Cup next year.

The club has also appointed two vice-captains - hooker Dimitri Szarzewski and scrumhalf Julien Dupuy.

Dupuy, of course, spent half of last season under suspension. On 12 December 2009 Stade Français played Ulster in Belfast and after the match Dupuy was cited for "making contact with the eye / eye area of Stephen Ferris".

The former Leicester Tigers No.9 was found guilty and suspended for 24 weeks. He appealed and the suspension was reduced to 23 weeks. He became eligible to play again on 27 May 2010.
